This is the Lantern Festival (Yuanxiao Jie), a traditional Chinese festival that officially marks the conclusion of Spring Festival celebrations.

Falling on the night of the first full moon in the lunar year, usually in February or March of the Gregorian calendar, the festival embodies unity, perfection, and family reunion.

Eating Yuanxiao (Tangyuan)

No celebration is complete without the festival’s iconic food: Yuanxiao or Tangyuan. These sweet glutinous rice dumplings are filled with classic fillings such as black sesame, red bean paste, and hawthorn.

In northern China, Yuanxiao are traditionally made by rolling fillings in dry glutinous rice flour. In the south, Tangyuan are formed by wrapping fillings in soft dough, much like making dumplings.

Whichever method is used, the round shape symbolizes family togetherness and harmony, as the Chinese character “yuan” carries the auspicious meaning of reunion.
